The Advent Season

Liturgical Seasons: The Advent Season

Advent is from the Latin word “adventus” which means “coming”.

Advent is a prayerful preparation with joyful expectation of the coming of Christ:

1st, as a remembrance of his first coming as a child which we celebrate on Christmas;

2nd, when He comes again in glory as a King who will judge us at the end of time.

Advent is a time for waiting and preparing to receive the Lord by spiritual purification. It is a time for renewal, of returning to the Father because we have strayed away from Him by our sins.

It always has 4 Sundays, though not necessarily 4 complete weeks.

Advent marks the start of a new Liturgical Year. It starts on the Sunday following Christ the King Sunday and ends in the afternoon of December 24 because the Christmas Eve mass opens the celebration of the Christmas Season.

The Advent color is violet except on the 3rd Sunday called Gaudete Sunday when the color used is pink.

Violet, because it is a time of Penance, Sacrifice, and Prayer. Pink, because it is a time of Joyful Hope as the time awaited draws nearer.

The advent wreath, a popular symbol of Advent, is circular and made of evergreens to symbolize everlasting life. It is a reminder of the long wait of the people when they lived in spiritual darkness while waiting for the coming of Christ.

The candles in the advent wreath represent the light of Christ in the world which illumines us. The 4 candles used also represent the 4 Sundays of Advent.
