Laudato Si - “Care For Our Common Home”

This is an encyclical written by Pope Francis, now part of the Church’s social teaching.

Pope Francis took his inspiration from Saint Francis of Assisi who is concerned with God’s creation, the poor, and the outcast.

The opening words come from a hymn on creation by St. Francis which says “Laudato Si, mi Signore” meaning, “Praise be you, my Lord”.

To quote a stanza: “Praised be You, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, producing varied fruits with colored flowers and herbs”.

It is said that St. Francis would gaze with such awe and wonder at creation – the sun, the moon that it filled him with joy and even more piety. He saw that every creature, no matter how small, was united to him by bonds of affection which is why he would call them ‘brother’ or ‘sister’.

The Scripture says that: “Through the greatness and the beauty of creatures one comes to know by analogy their maker” (Wis 13:5); indeed, “his eternal power and divinity have been made known through his works since the creation of the world” (Rom 1:20).

Pope Francis says that our problems today are from the fact that man has forgotten that God is the creator of all. Thus we see even other human beings as objects that are subject to human domination.

Let us be mindful that God, man, and all of creation are bonded like a universal family.

Nature cannot be seen as something apart from humanity, or merely the place where we live. Man’s greatness does not come from himself but only from God.
