BECs

The letters stand for Basic Ecclesial Communities.

In the late ‘60’s, foreign missionaries introduced the BEC movement in Mindanao which later spread throughout the country. It was known by different names such as GKK – Gagmay’ng Kristohanong Katilingban, MSK – Munting Sambayanang Kristiyano, BCC - Basic Christian Communities.

But BEC is the generic term used in ecclesial or church documents and theological discussions referring to small communities of faith within the Parish, in unity with their pastors, and lay leaders.

In 1991, our Bishops gathered at the Second Plenary Council of the Philippines or PCP II. This council adopted the BEC as a pastoral priority and defined its vision and mission.

Basic refers to the size. These are small enough for the members to know one another, call each other by name, and relate as friends. It should not be too small to become a mere barkada.

Basic also refers to the social location. These are formed in the neighborhood, at the grassroots, at the base of society.

Ecclesial – because it is a way of being church. Each one learns his or her faith and integrate this in his or her daily life, so that it is experienced in the neighborhood.

Communities – this word emphasizes the nature of the BEC’s which are not mere groupings or administrative units in the parish. Rather, these are people who live near each other and interact regularly who chose to form communities to help one another to get to heaven.

These are communities of families broken down into cells or seldas who gather around the Word of God and the Eucharist, so that the vision of a renewed Church as a community of disciples may be realized.
