The Christmas Season

The Christmas Season of the Liturgical Church Year starts on the evening of December 24 with the anticipated mass for the Feast of the Nativity, the birth of Jesus. It ends on the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus which falls on January 09 this 2017.

At Christmas, we celebrate the mystery of the Incarnation, when God who became man was born to Mary. This was the first coming of Jesus. This is a major feast so it is a holy day of obligation when everyone has to attend mass.

The Nativity is such an important feast that the Church celebrates it over 8 days, each day considered a “little Christmas”. We call this the Christmas Octave.

There are other feasts celebrated within the Christmas Season.

On the first Sunday after Christmas, we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family. This feast is so that we remember that the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph should be the model of all Christian families. This is celebrated on the first Sunday after Christmas.

On January 1, we have the solemnity of Mary Mother of God. This is a holy day of obligation so all Catholics should attend mass. Since this is also a civil holiday, everyone has time to go to mass.

The Epiphany of Jesus, popularly called the Feast of the Three Kings. We remember that this seemingly helpless child is actually the King and Ruler of the Universe.

The Christmas Season ends on the Baptism of Jesus which marks the start of His public life. This is celebrated on the Sunday after Epiphany.
