The Sacrament Of Marriage Or Matrimony

Marriage is a covenant love, an exchange of self between a man and a woman. It is not merely a contract which is an exchange of money and objects or services. From the sacrament of marriage arises a bond between the spouses, which by its very nature is exclusive and permanent, a union broken only at the death of one of the spouses.

God’s plan and the vocation to marriage is understood and seen in the very nature that God designed the body of a man and a woman.

The life-long covenant between spouses, created by God Himself in the beginning, was disturbed by sin.

Jesus restored the original order of creation when he forbade divorce in Matthew 19:6 which reads: “.So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Unlike other sacraments, the ministers are the couple themselves celebrating the marriage. They express their free consent to mutual self-giving which find fulfillment in the “two becoming one flesh.” The priest who celebrates is a witness for the Church and gives the blessing of the Church.

To help the couple live in a permanent union, Christ himself gives the strength and grace through the sacrament.

Marriage is an image of the love of Christ for us, his Church. The couple receive the grace to perfect their love for each other, strengthen their indissoluble unity, and help them be holy on the way to eternal life.

The first purpose of marriage is the unity of the couple and the second is procreation and education of children.

They must be open to having children and provide for their education while also conscious that parents are the primary and first teachers of the children.
